What is Circle Out?
Circle Out! game is one of the great modern classics. It calls upon parts of your brain that rarely get much exposure. For this reason, little children can often gain an advantage over adults who are just beginning to learn the game. Playing the game is an excellent visual memory exercise. Circle Out is filled with strategy – and winning is never a simple matter of chance.

When you see the game cards you are likely to be surprised. The “circle” aspect of the game is all abstract. Each card has two features – a top and bottom triangle of different colors. Circles are formed by connecting cards of the same color together: red to red, blue to blue etc. until the same color connects the chain of cards together at both ends. Bottom Triangles only link to Top Triangles and vice versa.
A Background in Economics
People ask all the time about where the idea for Circle Out came from. The answer, surprisingly, goes back to economics. Here is Joseph’s story:
“The idea for Circle Out came to me in January 2008. I was thinking a lot about what would happen if the US dollar failed. How could we buy or sell anything? I concluded that it would be back to the old trading system – which isn’t very good. I wanted to figure out a better trading system that could be used if there was ever a crisis.”
“I thought, ‘What if I have Apples and need Pears and my neighbor (that I would like to trade with) has Pears, but needs Peaches (not apples)? My neighbor won’t trade with me, but if there is a third person who has Peaches and needs my Apples then we can make a deal among the three of us.”
“To explore my idea further, I started cutting up index cards to represent people. Each card had two colors that represented something to trade for and something to trade away. From there I realized that the concept of ‘Circular Trading’ could be made into a game.”
